Weekly Unit Spotlight: Gill

10/20/2017

I had a little bit of technical difficulty, but here is yesterday's Unit Spotlight to make up for missing the deadline ;\ I will be posting something else shortly after for today's actual on-time post.
So I was saving this one for last (last of the characters shown in the story so far, that is) because Gill is a very basic bare-bones Jagen archetype. He's there with the protagonist almost the whole time, he's older, wiser, he's promoted upon recruitment, and his growth rates are so low that literally everyone is better than him. The sad part is, unlike most Jagens, Gill doesn't really even excel with his bases. He's just there to be a weak crutch if you can't quite finish off a brigand with one of your other units.
So, with that being said, Gill's description:
A noble knight and captain of the royal guard, he is Syllish's closest protector. When she became comatose, he vowed to protect her life with his own, if necessary. His commitment to her is astounding, and a tad disturbing, he remembers everything he's done for her, everything she's said, and everywhere she's been vividly and precisely. Those who know him say he is self-conscious, and that he acts "manly" so that people won't harass him for his extreme hygiene and OCD behavior, as well as his refusal to eat meat.
Gill may not have the best stats, but for the first few chapters you have him, he is an excellent contingency plan when you can't quite finish off a foe. The good news:
  • Good bases: Like every Jagen archetype, Gill has good bases, especially in HP, defense, speed, and skill. This means he can tank well for a little while, as well as hit with accuracy and decent power.
  • Little to no competition: There are very few mounted units in this project, especially in the normal cavalier category. The great knight Gill will be your only horse-riding unit, aside from Schall, who serves a different combat purpose, until Afrey joins, and that doesn't happen for a while. So while his growths are inferior and his bases will be quickly surpassed by everyone else, he will be needed on the battlefield much longer than a normal Jagen due to his utility and movement being unique for a while.
  • Usable growths in defense and HP: Gill will become generally useless once the player is past a certain point in the story; however, Gill does have a tiny niche in that he is durable. His defense growth of 40% supports his solid defense base, meaning that he can soak physical damage very well and can substitute for Schall as a choke point blocker if the player chooses not to train up Schall.
And the obvious bad news, stemming from him being a Jagen character:
  • Awful growths: Gill will quickly fall behind everyone else you have recruited and trained. He just undoubtedly will. No questions asked.
  • Powerful Loyalties: Gill's personal skill, Powerful Loyalties, is not nearly as useful as most personal skills. When Gill defeats an enemy, adjacent allies temporarily gain two points in strength and magic. So not only does this skill require strange positioning shenanigans often, it doesn't result in much benefit and is hard to use when Gill starts to trail behind in the stats department. It's sort of a lose-lose-lose.
  • Sub-par bases in comparison to Simon and Ramona: Simon and Ramona come in about two chapters after Gill does, and their stats are actually quite close to Gill's because they start at a higher level and have good bases. Gill's bases are good compared to your level one Taren, but not in comparison to Simon or Ramona, who also have the benefit of growing like normal, efficient units.
Gill is a Jagen. He's a starting-game crutch that fails to be useful after a few battles, and needs to be benched ASAP because he drains EXP due to his promoted status. That's really all there is to him.
